CUNY FACULTY Pledge to Withhold Spring 2020 Grades to Defend Adjuncts' Jobs
Rank and File Action writes to you with an urgent CALL TO ACTION to defend jobs at CUNY.
The university administration has taken extreme and draconian measures to cover perceived budget shortfalls for the fall semester. Despite the fact that no cuts have yet been made to the university budget, and little evidence shows that enrollments university-wide will be significantly lower than in previous semesters, campus administrators across the university are demanding 25 percent cuts to department payrolls, and in some instances, the non-reappointment of all semester-to-semester adjunct faculty. At John Jay College, this means about 40 percent of the entire faculty may not be teaching in the fall.
This is unacceptable and we will not stand for it!
In response to these cuts, we are organizing a university-wide grade strike to tell the administration that we will not accept one single layoff, furlough, or non-reappointment of any faculty or staff, whether they are PSC members or whether they belong to other unions such as DC-37.
To make such a strike successful we will need the support of the vast majority of the CUNY faculty, and so Rank and File Action has created the following Pledge to Withhold Grades
This pledge asks that every teaching faculty member at CUNY withhold grades until at least May 28, the last day to submit grades for many classes, reflecting the overwhelmingly positive vote for this action at Friday May 15’s RAFA Town Hall. If we reach the minimum threshold of 70 percent of the faculty, we pledge to withhold grades further until management agrees to negotiate for the reinstatement of all faculty and staff, or as long as is needed.
We urge you to add your name, to share this pledge on social media, to inform your students and solicit their support, and to ask every single faculty member you know to join this fight. We cannot continue business as usual while hundreds, if not thousands, of our colleagues face economic ruin and the loss of healthcare.
